Fungi That Cause Smelly Feet
by Dr. Roseline Hamsley
The fungus that causes athelete’s foot can also start to grow within the nails of the toes. The official name when it happens
on the nails is Onychomycosis. They strive on substances that make up the nails such as keratine, the protein substance of the nail.
Onychomycosis is an infection underneath the nail that can also penetrate the nail itself. If
it is ignored, it could impair one's ability to work or even walk because it is frequently accompanied by thickening of the nails, which then
cannot be easily trimmed, and may cause pain while wearing shoes. This disease can frequently be accompanied by a secondary bacterial and/or
yeast infection in/or about the nail plate.
It should be noted that although sometimes not noticed it is this nail fungus which creates a
horrible stink although it may not present any visible or other detectable symptoms. The characteristics of the smells between a nail fungal
infection and a bacterial type are quite different. Bacterial odors are generally more mustrady leaning towards a rotting onion smell while
fungal nail odor is more musty much like the smell of bread mould.
In conclusion, fungi can also cause smelly feet although sometimes it is misdiagnosed to be
just your normal bacterial foot odors. It pays to know and diagnose at an early stage the causes of the smells to tackle the problem in a more
precise manner.
