Methanethiol Relating to Smelly Feet by Dr. Roseline Hamsley
Without going through the whole process of how sweat is formed and its purpose in the human body, sweat is generally used for two things, firstly it is used to cool the body and secondly and most importantly especially for people with smelly feet, sweat is also used to excrete waste from the body in the forms of uria, ammonia and other waste chemicals.
When you sweat all the waste is brought out together with the sweat, when the sweat eventually evaporates your skin is then left with the waste product which if combined with a moist and dark place would make an excellent place for bacteria to grow and spawn.
The bacteria that are responsible for smelly feet will actually metabolize all the waste produced by the sweat along with dead skin to convert amino acid methionine to methanethiol. Basically Methanethiol is the gas produced after the bacterial have finished processing the waste products from the sweat and dead skin.
Methanethiol (also known as methyl mercaptan) is a colorless gas with a smell like rotten cabbage. It is a natural substance found in the blood, brain, and other tissues of people and animals. It is released from animal feces (and in our case bacteria feces too!). It occurs naturally in certain foods, such as some nuts and cheese. It is also one of the main chemicals responsible for bad breath and the smell in flatulence. The chemical formula for methanethiol is CH3SH; it is classified as a thiol.
